The Power of Probiotics and How They Can Affect Pet Health

As pet owners, we all want to keep our furry friends feeling their best, and when they’re not, we wonder what we could do to help them feel better.

According to pet health insurance provider Nationwide, gastrointestinal distress and digestive issues are some of the most common reasons for dog vet visits. If not taken care of and treated, these issues can lead to dehydration, electrolyte and acid-base imbalances, and malnutrition. Common signs of stomach issues in dogs are vomiting or regurgitation, constipation and/or diarrhea, changes in appetite, flatulence, weight loss, and weakness. If you notice any of these in your four-legged family member, take them to the vet to rule out any serious underlying issues.

A common cause of gastrointestinal distress is your dog eating something their stomach can’t handle, and one thing that can help combat these issues is probiotics. Probiotics are live beneficial bacteria added to some pet food products to help aid in gut health. Bacillus coagulans can help promote healthy digestion, which may improve stool quality. PawCo’s meals contain probiotics, and finished product testing is conducted to ensure the survival of the probiotic strain.

Vegan food may actually be the way to go if your dog suffers from gastrointestinal distress. Research has shown that beef, chicken, dairy, and egg are dogs’ most commonly reported allergies – allergies that can cause stomach issues. Vegan food has also proven to reduce other allergy symptoms, such as issues with skin and fur.

Additional benefits of a vegan diet in dogs include reduced cancer risk and reduced risk of canine obesity. Read our blog post about how a vegan diet can help your dog’s health here.

In addition to probiotics, PawCo’s plant-based dog food contains all the necessary vitamins, minerals, and amino acids in addition to probiotics. Our meals are 100% animal-free, low-fat, complete, and balanced, and they’re sure to help your pup live a healthy, happy life!
